“Camelias – Trewithan Gardens, Cornwall”

For all who eagerly await the arrival of our Isles of Scilly Calendars at this time each year I am delighted to tell you that the 15th Anniversary Edition for 2023 is now available for you to order and purchase.

Our local Cornwall printers, Booths Print of Penryn, have recently invested in a new “state-of-the-art” Kodak four-colour digital press resulting in even better images with consistently accurate print quality and colour reproduction.

If I am permitted to say so as both the photographer and publisher, I think this is possibly our best-ever edition, a view echoed in the reactions from some of our trade buyers in recent days:

“Some lovely pictures, great job!”
Isles of Scilly Tourist Information Centre

“They're beautiful calendars”
Waterstones Bookshop, Truro

Calendars are not just for Christmas and the New Year.
They make wonderful birthday and anniversary presents throughout the year.

Amongst the first of our usual retailers to have already placed orders for this latest edition of this calendar and where you can now also buy them are: Tideline Gifts and Card Shop, The Isles of Scilly Tourist Information Centre and St. Mary’s Hall Hotel in Hugh Town all on the island of St. Mary’s, Karma St. Martin’s Hotel on St. Martin’s, and on the mainland in Cornwall: The Edge of the World Bookshop in Penzance and Waterstones Bookshop in Truro. Others are expected to order shortly.

Details of the size, specifications and high quality of this latest edition are the same as in previous years and can been seen in our website.

The Gardens of Cornwall

Cornwall is rightly famous for its many wonderful gardens which can be seen at their very best at this time of year when you can enjoy seeing a profusion of Magnolias, Camelias, Azaleas, Bluebells and Rhododendrons in bloom.

One of my local favourites is Trewithen House and Gardens which I have visited several times in recent weeks and which is where the “banner picture” at the top of this newsletter was taken and where I photographed some of their spectacular Camelias, one or two of which we hope to possibly feature in a new Greetings Card in the near future. It is rightly described as “one of the loveliest gardens in England”.

You can as usual buy direct from us here online this very popular “Rhododendron” Greetings Card which I photographed in a garden in Cornwall and which you can also now buy from the small selection of our Greetings Cards in the Tea Shed Shop at Trewithen where they also serve delicious light lunches, snacks, cakes and of course Cornish Cream teas.

Trewithen House and Gardens is located off the A390 main road between Truro and St. Austell. Here is a clickable link to their website: trewithengardens.co.uk

Over the past year we have had a growing number of special requests for favourite images from our archive to be custom printed on canvas and “box framed”. These are usually ordered as surprise gifts to family members or friends for “big” birthdays and special anniversaries - maybe pictures of places with special memories for the person concerned.

I am thinking about possibly getting a trial print done in this way of the very atmospheric photo of rising seas by the Men-a-vaur Rocks looking towards Round Island and its Lighthouse which you can see as the February main picture in our new Isles of Scilly 2023 Calendar and another planned print is of the white sand beach and rocks of The North End of the Isle of Iona looking to Storm Island in the Inner Hebrides. In case either of these images in this format is of interest to you or you have any other requests please give me a call or email to discuss :

An approximately A4 size * framed print on canvas typically costs about £120 each plus £10.00 for the special protective packaging and postage including the cost of extra insurance whilst in transit. I personally manage each of these orders individually which entails quite a bit of time agreeing the choice of image, preparation for printing by our graphic designer, “running around” to the local printers-framers, special protective packaging and mailing which is why they cost a little extra.

Please allow enough time when ordering in advance of any “special day” for timely production and shipping.

All of the people who have bought these and the people to whom they have been given as gifts have said that they are delighted with them.

* Other print sizes are available – details and prices on enquiry.

… And finally:

Thank you to those who enjoy these “And finally” selections who have given me such positive feedback. I have again looked through my “Funnies” and “Quotations” files and hope you will enjoy the following: something to make you laugh, I hope, and something thoughtful with my apologies if you have heard these before:

Said to be a genuine extract from a letter to the Scottish “Ministry of Pensions”, as it then was, in Edinburgh:

“I want money badly as quick as you can send it. I have been in bed with the doctor for a week and he doesn’t seem to be doing any good. If things don’t improve I shall have to get another doctor”.

“Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face.”
Victor Hugo – French dramatist, novelist and poet (1802-1885)

Hoping you continue to enjoy my photography and our publications and that I may be of service to you in the near future.

Hoping to hear from you soon. With my thanks and best wishes,

Robert Sanger
